FALL23 SMALL GROUPS

Psalm Basics for Catholics: Seeing Salvation History in a New Way

  • Time: 7:00pm-8:15pm
  • Dates: OCT 2,9, 16, 23, 30 and Nov 6 (6 weeks)
  • Location: St. Pius X Munro Room 1

Description: Using the book by the same title authored by Steubenville Professor and biblical scholar John Bergsma, the group will meet to discuss and reflect on the presence of Jesus in the Book of Psalms and how the psalms help us understand their meaning in light of salvation history. Because the psalms are said to be the Old Testament’s ‘masterwork of prayer’, the group will also learn to pray the psalms through the Church’s school of prayer known as the Liturgy of the Hours.  Also known as the Divine Office, the Liturgy of the Hours is the Church’s highest form of prayer after the Mass.

“The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis Book Study

  • Time: 7:00pm-8:30pm
  • Dates: OCT 2,9, 16, 23, 30 and Nov 6, 13 (7 weeks)
  • Location: St. Pius X Munro Room 1

Description: The Screwtape Letters is C.S. Lewis’ fictional novel. It is a collection of 31 letters from one devil to another – from an experienced devil, Uncle Screwtape, to his inexperienced nephew, Wormwood – concerning the corruption of a human soul. By taking on important Christian moral topics from the perspective of the evil, not the good, C.S. Lewis invites the reader to reflect on how the demonic may be influencing him. By giving a perfect “negative” of Christian doctrine, Lewis gives us a thorough guide to how not to be a Christian — and therefore, it’s an equally thorough guide to how to be a Christian. Simply put, the more we hear how a devil hates something, the more we are supposed to like it.
